7 Essential kits you need for swimming as a beginner

Do you remember the first time you got into the swimming pool?

It could be a pool party, and after enjoying the crisp coldness and wet pressure against your skin, an exciting idea to learn sprouted. So you considered swimming lessons.

For some also, they got introduced right from infancy. Whatever your case, after deciding to take swimming lessons, you've been wondering about the best swimming kits to start with.

Don't worry, I'm here to help you find the perfect swimsuit and swimming accessories.

what does swimming do for your body?

Swimming is often hailed as the ultimate full-body workout. Swimming challenges every muscle in your body. Through rhythmic movement in the water, swimming enhances strength, endurance, and flexibility.

It promotes muscle toning and improves posture, leading to a well-balanced physique. Furthermore, the resistance offered by water amplifies the calorie-burning potential, aiding in weight management.

Whether swimming for fun, exercise, or competitive swimming, you still need the right essential kits to get started on your journey.

1. Swimsuit

I'm sure you've been to the pool with some random shorts to swim, and the instructor said no way. He mentioned, “ONLY CHLORINE-FREE WEARS. “ That should tell you you can’t swim in any costume.

A tip is to pick a swimsuit with 80 percent or more polyester. It prevents the custome from breaking  down in chlorine or salt water(for open water swimming)

For men, in choosing your shorts, pick tight-fitting shorts. It helps with leg movement. Broad shorts drag you when swimming. We have types of men's swimsuits; trunks, broad-shorts, swim briefs, square-cut shorts, and jammers.

Pick your swimsuit choice depending on your taste and preference and what you’ll feel confident and comfortable in.

Now for women, your swimsuit should fit without extra space on any body part.

2. Microfibre towel

Microfibre towels are the best you’d ever use. They're absorbent and quickly dry themselves due to the highly porous nature of the microfibre.

Unlike other towels, you have to rub against your skin with pressure to dry the water. With a microfibre towel, you do that with the least effort. Just a tap, and the water is gone without frustration.

The same applies if you have thick hair. The fibers absorb the water from the scalp of your head and not just the surface.

That’s why you should have a microfibre towel.

3. Swimming Flip flops

You knew you must wear something under your feet when you nearly slipped close to the pool. Or the last time you had a potential cut or abrasion under your tender feet. It was so annoying and distressing.

The flip-flops avoid slipping on the edge of the pool. It can get worse and scary should that happen.

Also, at the beach to avoid little pieces of sharp objects piercing through you.

When going to the public washrooms at the pool, you wouldn't want to walk barefoot on such contaminated surfaces.

Your flip-flops should be comfortable and give you that freedom.

4. Swimming Goggles

I used to swim without goggles and with my eyes wide open. I couldn’t see far enough, and it didn’t take long before I felt uncomfortable.

On other days when I tried the swimming goggles, swimming felt different and more enjoyable.

Let me run you down quickly on how to pick the fitting swimming goggles.

Your swimming goggles must be safe and comfortable. Go for a size large if you have a large face and a small size if you have a small face.

Now, before you are sure of the right pick, apply the suction test. Place the goggles on your face without the strap. Press it firmly against your face, and you'll feel the suction. If it doesn't come off, then that's your size. It means it's watertight for swimming. If it does come off, then you have to change it.

Swimming goggles that are too tight will add pressure to sensitive eye parts.

When it comes to lenses, we have three types. We have clear lenses. It's used in dark swimming waters.

Also, we have smokey lenses used in bright swimming waters.

And lastly, the mirror lenses. Which is best used in sunlight and open water like beaches.

5. Swim fins

Some years ago, I used to think only professional swimmers wore fins. Whatever reason made me think that I don't know.

Little did I know that swim fins help you increase your kick tempo and improve ankle flexibility.

You could be a beginner, but do you want to go next level with your leg endurance, power, and strength work? I can hear you say yes!

The right fins will help you improve your flexibility, leg endurance, and powerful kick.

The swimming fins make you go absurdly fast in the water and help you develop a proper kicking technique.

We have long swim fins and short swim fins. Long swim fins are best for young swimmers still learning how to move in water, snorkelers, and recreational swimmers. At the same time, short fins are designed to boost propulsion and amplify power in the water. It allows swimmers to imitate a natural race tempo, increase speed and enhance balance.

Remember that the fins' length should match the training you're doing.

6.  Swimming Pullbuoy

It's a figure-eight-shaped piece of closed-cell foam placed in the middle of your thigh for a swim workout.

For many serious swimmers, it's an indispensable piece of swimming equipment. But know that it can play havoc if not used properly to your body position.

What the pull buoy does is help you focus on your stroke, build core strength, and slow down your stroke.

And, of course, to create extra buoyancy for your hips and bring your body position in line so you are more streamlined.

Beginner swimmers should develop their kicks first or use the smallest size they can get. A three-stripe pull buoy is excellent. For advanced swimmers, it's a piece of great equipment for developing body alignment but also power in their stroke and core body strength.

Be wary of overusing it and being reliant on them.

7. Swimming Kickboard

This is a powerful tool for beginners that supports your arms and upper body, allowing you the freedom to rest whiles you focus on the lower part of the body( buttocks, thighs, calves, core muscles)

Also, for swimmers looking for buoyancy around their torso.

A swimming kickboard is also an excellent tool for strengthening your legs and core. You get to focus on your kick techniques without worrying about what your arms are doing.

For adults who are beginners, go for thick and large kickboards. This will balance your weight and help you immensely. And kids should opt for the lighter ones.

With these essential kits, you'll be well-prepared to dive into the pool and embrace the joy of swimming.

Whether aiming to become a competitive swimmer or simply seeking a fun and healthy activity, investing in the right gear will undoubtedly enhance your swimming experience. So gear up, dive in, and make a splash as you embark on your exciting journey as a swimmer!

Enjoy the process, and stay safe in the water.
